sweet nieces

Last week, my step-sister and my two favorite girls came to town. Even though I wanted to sleep after my 70-hour work week, I woke up at the crack of 8:30 a.m. to go to my parents' house to hang out with them on Monday and Thursday.

I was never much of a kid-person, growing up. I had one cousin who was born when I was 12, but at that age, I wasn't really interested in hanging out with a baby. Megan came along when I was 16. She was the first baby I ever held the day it was born and the first kid I have ever really watched grow up. Megan was born in Houston and my mom was her primary baby-sitter when she was young, so we have always been very close. I haven't gotten to spend as much time with Vera in her preschool years since they now live in northern Louisiana, but every time I see her, I try to make it count! I love that she knows that she gets to hang out with Aunt Lauren when she comes to Houston. Nieces (and I'm sure nephews, though I wouldn't know) are so so fun, y'all.

Fun at the park!

Megan is now 12 and Vera is nearly 5. I can't believe Meg is almost a teenager! Even though her little sister drives her crazy, she is the sweetest big sister (even though she denies it). I love that she will still come to Houston and hang out with her boring old aunt and I know that a day will come soon where she gets too old and cool for us. Luckily, on this trip, she was still young enough to go to the park and the zoo.

Miss Vera is as fun as a kid can get (her sister was equally fun, but it's hard to remember those days!). She has decided that she l-o-v-e-s me and I can't get enough. She loves to sing and chatter. She cracks me up constantly with her proclamations that she wants to be a volcano-artist so that she can paint volcanoes and then someone can design them (??? what ???).

We had a fun trip to the Houston Zoo. I probably haven't been in 7-8 years, so it was fun to see everything that they added. It was a fun family day!

Who else has nieces (or nephews)? What do you like to do with them? I want to take off a week this summer when they are in town, so I need ideas!

  1. Aw, it looks like a fun trip to the zoo - they HAVE added a lot there lately! I don't have any real nieces or nephews, so I just pretend that my friends' babies are them. And I am Auntie Ari. :) Which is totally cool with me because then I can hand them back over when they start to cry!

  2. Looks like you guys had a ton of fun - my family is still small and nuclear, so I can't wait until my siblings have kids!

I like comments and read them all but I'm not great about responding to them, so please don't be offended. I would much rather visit your blog instead!
