things that were better when I was a kid

Last night I was on my own for dinner, so I decided to go to Arby's. When I was a kid, it was in my mall and my mom always had a coupon so I have fond memories of a roast beef sandwich and curly fries. It's kind of out of the way, so I have probably only been a few times in the past few years. I went to the drive-thru, took my food home, and was sorely disappointed. It was kind of gross. I guess I should have listened to my husband and his distaste for Arby's all these years. Pretty sure I won't be going back. The memory just didn't hold up to the reality.

Mine looked like this too. Not a fan. Via.

There are lots of other things that were good when I was younger that are kind of terrible now.

Kool-Aid. I can't handle the sugar. It tastes like medicine.

The crazier the color, the worse it tastes. Via.

Full House. How did I watch this? It's awful! The acting. The writing. Bad. I did enjoy the Jesse and the Rippers reunion on Jimmy Fallon a few weeks ago, but these days I would rather read Full House Reviewed than watch the actual show (do you know about this site? It's hilarious).

Uncle Jesse, why did your last name change after the first season or two? Via.

Chips Ahoy Cookies. Ummm, no. They're hard and just not good. If I am going to consume calories on a Nabisco treat, give me an Oreo any day.

I love chocolate but these just don't do it for me anymore. Via.

Swimming. I used to love spending hours in the pool. Now? About an hour with my nieces is all I want to spend in the water. I would rather sit poolside in the shade than turn into a raisin. Ick.

This is the best pic I could find to demonstrate me at the pool - hanging out at my parents' pool with my grandma, clearly not swimming. My nieces were in the water having a blast.

Dairy Queen Blizzards. I have fond memories of getting these on car trips with my cousins. Now I think they are a mess and can't finish a small one. I loved DQ's dipped cones as a kid and I am almost afraid to have one now; I worry the real thing won't live up to my memories.

But they look so good! Should I give them another try? Via.

Things that will never end up on this list: Blue Bell ice cream, Coke, Boy Meets World, and sleeping til 10 a.m.

What was better when you were a kid?

  1. I recently visited the boardwalk in my beach town, for some reason it looked so much smaller than it did when I was little. I was so disappointed.

  2. I agree with everything except Full House and Blizzards :) Yes Full House has terrible acting, but I'm still obsessed. Haha and as for Blizzards...it's ice cream which is my favorite food group. Enough said! Another thing that isn't as awesome as when I was a kid is Summer break. Since I don't have one and all!

can you believe that i've never had arbys before (not even sure if they have that in toronto -- at least i've never seen it) or kool-aid (my mom refused to buy me anything fun when i was a kid).

  5. The full house example! Yes, i don't remember what movie it was that I recently watched. But i remember thinking, geez how did I eat this up as a kid?

I never add cheese to my arby's because it does not look appetizing!

  7. Wow. I just cannot get behind this list! I love Arby's!! And I actually don't feel too much like a fatty when I eat there b/c the roast beef is not really THAT bad for you (compared to other fast food meals). And DQ blizzards??? What, are you INSANE??? haha! And Chips A'Hoy...okay, so they're not as good as freshly baked cookies...but I could still eat a whole row in one sitting if I let myself! ha! But I do agree with Full House and Koolaid (but I usually just don't add much sugar and it's still tasty to me). Maybe I'm too much of a kid at heart! <3

  8. I am with the others...I still love me some Blizzards!

Chips Ahoy are not good. They don't taste like any chocolate chip cookie I have ever had. Arby's is good for their curly fries. I could eat those dipped in Arby's sauce every damn day.

  9. A lot of books were better when I was younger.

    Totally agree on the sugar.

I have severe Arby's issues. Severe.

  10. Our last visit to Arby's was a bad experience too. It's a shame because they were great when we were kids! I'm with you on the sugar... also pixie stix...I used to love those... now not so much!

And I'm the same way with pools now... I hate, hate, hate raisin fingers. The last time I went swimming (maybe two years ago?) I made sure I kept my hands above the water because I didn't want wrinkly fingers. Haha.

It's been awhile since I had a blizzard... I hope I still like them!

  12. Arbys??? Bleeeehh.

I still eat Chips Ahoy. In suburban smores.

TCBY has changed. I used to go all the time after school, in middle school, now it's all... you look foolish with a blue mouth after a certain age. That age is 12.

  14. What was better was the way I could eat anything and not gain an ounce! I think it's because so many kids wanted to play outside and do outdoor activities when I was a kid. Now they are on Facebook at age 10.

  15. I'm a sucker for a blizzard when I see a DQ! Those and McFlurries. Ugh so not good for me!

I used to love the ritz crackers with cheese, but now not so much.

  16. It's so sad when you realize your favorite things from childhood are really crap! I agree about Arbys and chips ahoy for sure. We don't have a DQ close to us, so I'm not sure about that one - might be for the best though b/c brownie batter blizzards are a weakness of mine :)

I like comments and read them all but I'm not great about responding to them, so please don't be offended. I would much rather visit your blog instead!
