five on friday: all over the place

First full week back at work, first full week back at blogging. It's been a good one for me; I feel like I really tried hard to show you what was in my head. I am really interested in a lot of interpretations of yesterday's post. If I may add a clarification, it would be this - I will definitely not be less "sassy" (my favorite descriptor, thanks) and I will continue to vent for sure, but I will try not to be unnecessarily negative or vent to multiple people about the same damn thing, in blog life or real life. Once it's out to one person, that should be enough. So now, on with the bullet points, because I have a story for you...

1) If you don't know me in real life, then you don't know that I turn red instantly when I am hot, embarrassed, have to speak intelligently and feel underprepared, and in almost any other uncomfortable situation. There is just no playing it cool. Normally I sit at my desk at lunch, but yesterday I decided to walk around Houston's Underground Tunnels. I was on a tile floor approaching a glass door that I would need to pull open. The man approaching me looked like a former student at my school who I knew well enough to say hello to. I was busy shifting the cookies I bought to my left hand so I could open the door as well as looking at the guy to see if I knew him, when BAM. My left foot shot forward onto my heel and my right knee slammed the ground, my right toes planted behind me so that my foot bent awkwardly (I was wearing ballet flats with no support). Despite my unathletic frame, I magically somehow popped right back up without using my hands and the guy (who was not who I thought he was) asked if I was okay. I told him yeah, I had no idea how that had happened... and then I looked down and saw a huge puddle of soda. Apparently I was in my own world and totally missed it. I was instantly red, and the guy behind me who saw the whole thing walked in the same direction as me for several more minutes. Real smooth. Oops.

I tried to not get my feet in there but I wanted you to see the icing situation my coworkers insisted on. Upside down recycle bin, grocery bags, and a lanyard binder-clipped around my knee. But, I am feeling okay now so I guess it worked! Moral of the story: get more pedicures. You never know when you may want someone to look at your foot to tell if it's swollen.

2) American Express customer service amazed me this week. I have a card that I only use for Christmas and work expenses, so I don't check its balance often at all. I had an email from them Wednesday morning about possible fraudulent activity - $75 to Jdate.com. They declined the charge. At 8am, they were calling me to ask about that charge and two others, none of which were mine. A new card was waiting for me when I got home from work on Thursday night. I love that they saw it first and put a real person on the phone when there was an issue. It's not a huge deal but I love to share good service stories!

3) I admit that I am easily influenced by other bloggers when it comes to what to buy. I don't shop often so I like to get things recommended to me. Yesterday Ari posted about Smashbooks - do you know about these? I used to like to scrapbook but it's expensive, messy, and takes so much time. I still hold on to brochures and tickets and stuff though and they just sit in my house. I think this will be a great way to document life without a lot of mess and I WILL go get one (or two... there is a food themed one I could use just for restaurants...) this weekend!

4) What's your work dress code like? Mine is normally business casual but during the summer and winter break for students, I get to wear jeans. And it is more amazing than it should be. I don' t have to iron as much and I feel more like me. Plus this week when it was cold, I got to wear boots. If you wear jeans to work, appreciate it on my behalf because I'm back to regular dress next week!

5) The Mindy Project is so ridiculously good and if you aren't watching it, start now. I thought it started slow but about halfway through last season, I got really into it. It's one of the few shows that I actually look forward to lately. I think this season is completely hilarious and if I could just steal Mindy Lahiri's wardrobe, I would never need to shop again.

Just realized there has been no Gwen this season, and I'm okay with that.

See More Good: A woman here in Houston left a $100 tip on a $44 tab. The waitress read it as $10 and went on about her life. When the woman saw her bank statement and that the full tip wasn't applied, she went back to restaurant with $100 cash. So nice!

We have a fun staycation weekend planned with friends. I'm sure there will be plenty of opportunities to Tweet and Instagram about it, so use those fancy new social media buttons I just added to follow along if you don't already. I hope it's thawing out where you are!

  1. I get to wear whatever I want to work! I know how lucky I am and am so appreciative haha. I only have to dress up a few times a year and I hate it. I love my jeans!!

  2. I've worked with and been friends with lots of Houstonians and I never knew there were underground walking tunnels. What a awesome idea!

I've seen Smashbooks and I've thought about getting one for all the Kelli and Tyson mementos I have shoved in a box. They look so easy to do!

  3. Oh my gosh! Your tunnel accident does not sound fun. I kind of feel like it's my fault b/c I couldn't meet up with you. Like it wouldn't have happened at all. Major guilt now...Your weekend staycation sounds like so much fun, I hope you'll write about it on Monday!

  4. Yay, I'm glad you're going to get a SmashBook - I was going to reply to your comment on my blog asking if it was really that easy... yes, it really is! And I totally saw the food-themed one at Michael's and thought it seemed up your alley. I think it may have been on sale for under $6 there, I can't remember tho. Meanwhile, once you start using it, you'll definitely have to blog about it!

Ouch about your accident, glad you're okay though. Oof!

No boots to work here, unless they are under the pants (aka we can't wear pants tucked into boots, which I think is super cute). And I only get jeans on Friday and that's only with our neon orange spirit shirts, so that's fun. Blegh.

    Happy Friday!

  5. Oooh, I am loving this smashbook concept! I am always influenced by bloggers, haha. Sorry you hurt your foot! That is something I would totally do. I watch the Mindy Project, and then sort of forgot about it. I need to watch again. We can wear jeans to work! I still pair it with a nice top/shoes "most" days, but I wonder about some of my co-workers and their choices, haha. Happy Friday, chickie!

  6. Holy Moly! So glad your accident wasn't any worse. I bet you're a little sore from it though. And awesome job AE! I don't know many who would do something like that! Of course I've never watched the Mindy Project. Maybe I should check it out. Happy Friday!! And thanks for linking up! y"all enjoy your weekend!

  7. I turn red quickly too! When I get upset or mad my entire chest started breaking out into red rashes too! I hate it! Good recovery from what could have been though for sure!

I haven't watched The Mindy Project, I will have to check it out.

I wear dress pants Monday-Thursday and jeans and a nice shirt on Fridays. Wearing a suit would be too dressy for my office, but jeans and a tshirt isn't enough.

My husband has some good experiences with Amex too! Always good to hear a good experience with a company like that!

  8. I work at a university as well so just like you business casual usually but jeans when students are on break. Yesterday was my last "jean" day, we have new student orientation today. :(

  9. Glad your knee and ankle is better. My office is business casual with casual Fridays. I miss being able to wear jeans everyday! I haven't watched Mindy's show at all but I need to catch up on it.

  10. Scary that someone was using your card but kind of funny that they were doing so in order to find a date! I wonder if their online profile said "Credit card thief."

  12. The Mindy Project is next up on my list, after I finish Parenthood. I've never seen it.
Aw you poor thing, that sounds/looks painful! And embarrassing. Whomp.
jdate.com. Hilarious use of a stolen card. Nice of the American Express to fix it so face!

  16. Annnnd another thing we have in common! Getting bright red and embarrassed happens to me all the time. I can't stand it. So glad it wasn't worse...I have walked into glass doors if that makes ya feel better. ;)
This Mindy show needs to go on my Netflix list, after BB of course.
So jealous of your dress code! I have worn jeans to work a whopping two times (at my old job). Now I get to start wearing them again...but only one a month. Happy Friday!

  17. I have fallen in so many places walking around the city over the past five and a half years lost in staring at something. I feel your pain and laughed a little at your triage.

I do not get to wear jeans. We don't even have casual Friday like my last office had. I miss that dearly.

  18. Ouch! Well thank goodness you didn't know the guy - that might have been worse!! And no fun with fraudulent activity, but way to catch it American Express. Enjoy your weekend. I can't wait to hear about it!

  19. I love wearing jeans to work!!! We really don't have a written dress code here but in attempt to appear somewhat professional I wear jeans only on Th and Fr. USAA has customer service like that! I love it too. Especially with so much automation these day. Glad your fall wasn't wrose. I get so embarrassed when I fall in public.

  20. I can't even believe you shot right back up. When I fell in the office the other day I actually had to sit there for a few and tell myself that I was too old to cry!! Hahaha!

I really need to try the minds project!!

  21. I really need to start watching the Mindy Project.

  22. Ahhh I hate almost falling in public, I almost wiped out on a piece of uneven sidewalk in front of my office the other day, but I tried to pretend like it didn't happen, which sometimes makes it worse (I jammed my ankle)! Glad you're okay though! And my office is business casual too, wish it included yoga pants and leggings! haha

  23. I couldn't have related more with this post. I get red even when it isn't called for. I HATE it. My boyfriend likes to add on top of my embarrassment by pointing it out to everyone. And I am probably the most clumsy person ever too, so I have definitely been there MANY times. I hope you aren't still sore from your fall!

  25. I'm shocked by the lengths that lady went through to make sure the waitress got her correct tip! Live hearing stories like that!!!! :)

  26. Ouch, sorry to hear about your fall! I, too, would be crazy embarrassed. I'm often in my own world -- I'm likely to run into a door one of these days.

I'm spoiled when it comes to work attire. I always wear jeans. I may dress up once or twice a month, but not a lot of us do. I usually wear a sweater, jeans, and riding boots.

I saw some of your Instagram photos -- looks like you had a good staycation with your friends!

I like comments and read them all but I'm not great about responding to them, so please don't be offended. I would much rather visit your blog instead!
