Friday night, we grabbed a bottle of wine on the way home from work, then went to Pizaro's for pizza. They have this special oven from Italy that cooks pizza at 900 degrees for 90 seconds. The ingredients are sparse but high quality. A salad, a sausage and mushroom pizza, and a bottle of Riesling (no corkage fee!) made for an easy, yummy Friday dinner. I proceeded to go home, camp out in front of the TV, and fall asleep at 9pm during the Olympic Opening Ceremonies. Oops.
This place is casual and I love that it's BYOB... pizza is good too!
Saturday started slow, but then we got out to check out the new Costco basically down the street from the house. I have never been to one before and I wanted to buy everything. $30 Toms? $15 queen-sized blankets? And all the food on top of that? We went in undecided on a membership and then fell in love, so we stood in the super long line to get one. We didn't buy anything too exciting this time through but we did buy more paper towels than I can store so I already feel like I need a stockpile room like the ladies on Extreme Couponing.
The most exciting part of the weekend was visiting a food truck park close by. A former favorite food truck, the Modular, decided to focus their efforts on a restaurant, Goro and Gun, a few years ago. A few weeks ago, they opened their food truck back up as Goro and Gun's The Modular with a new look. The truck was painted by a local artist who also painted my favorite animal in the art project I worked on in November. It was gorgeous!
Andrew ordered their Yaka Mien, which was a beef soup with ramen and a 63 degree egg. I tried it pre-egg and it was delicious. I would definitely order it and let him have the egg. A 63 degree egg basically looks like a hard-boiled egg, but the yolk is barely set. You can basically pop it open and stir the yolk into the broth. We also got an order of flash-fried brussels sprouts to share and you guys... they were amazing! They had pickled raisins in them for a little sweetness and I could have eaten two orders on my own, easily.
Andrew ordering from Goro and Gun's The Modular | Brussels Sprouts | The Beef Soup | Mac and Cheese Eggrolls | We were giggling at this unfortunately-named truck. Really people??
I had a party to go to that night, so I just wanted to snack. I ordered beef and mac and cheese eggrolls from a truck called Muiishi Makirritos; they were good, but the beef flavor was almost too strong. It was a really interesting concept, though, and came with a creamy cilantro sauce that I didn't like with the rolls but was great by itself. I wished I had some tortilla chips to dip in it!
My friend since high school's sister had a housewarming party on Saturday night that was pretty much ladies-only, so I left Andrew behind to attend. I have known their family for so long that it was great to see not only my friends but their mom, cousin, and family friend and catch up! The family friend has a cookie decorating business and made cookies as favors. They were so cute!
Sunday was cleaning and laundry day since Andrew was smoking a brisket and was pretty chained to the house. The brisket came out really well and he made smoked guacamole in the middle of the day as a snack. He also grilled corn. I give him a hard time whenever possible but I am really am lucky to have a husband who enjoys cooking. We also started watching Season 3 of Homeland and really, I am kind of getting why everyone hated Dana so much. She is driving me nuts!
So, that's basically it. Do you ever whine and ruin someone's plans? What are your favorite non-single Dave songs? What's your favorite thing to get at Costco? I feel the need to go again already...
I am Queen Surprise Ruiner. And then I get mad at myself for ruining it. :)
ReplyDeleteI am also a Costco convert. I swore I never would need a membership to a warehouse store like that, but now I couldn't live without it!
I am totally jealous that you have a Costco so close to you! The ONLY one in the Birmingham Metro is about 45 minutes away from me in the most annoying/traffic part of town so I dont have a membership anymore. I hit the one up in Atlanta just about weekly! I loved their produce and meat department!
ReplyDeleteAll your food sounds amazing, as always!!! Grilled corn is one of my favorites!
Have a great week my friend!
That pizza looks amazing! And ahh yay that you get to go to the concert you wanted, that's sweet!!
ReplyDeleteCute cookies, my friend makes cookies like that. I commissioned her to make them for my BFF's shower in April.
ReplyDeleteI want all of the food truck things but particularly the brussels sprouts.
Three times this week I've said I wish Costco was near me. Sam's is less than 5 minutes away and Costco is like 45. I'm not making the drive.
I am a surprise blurter - like I can't keep it from people.
i can't keep surprises from people either. when i bought my husband his bike whatever that he wanted, i hounded him for days before christmas to open it because i was so excited for him to open it. then i started dropping hints galore and before i knew it, he knew what it was. oh well!

I don't have a Costco any near me, so I have never been to one. But $30 Toms ... I may need to track one down!
ReplyDeleteI have ruined just about EVERY surprise J has ever planned for me. It's pathetic. But I'm so type A that I have to be "in control" of everything--so it's really hard to surprise me. Like with those tickets? We would have been in trouble because I would have just bought them anyway--because I'm a brat. That's my I ended up getting proposed to in the middle of a fight because it was the only time he could catch me off guard. I am SO jealous of your food truck scene. I want to eat from a food truck so badly!
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to go to a Costco for the longest time-- we don't have them here. My Mother often travels to Chicago and has told me many, many stories of her Costco adventures.. I'm so jealous. Oh and those Brussels Sprouts look yummy. I am obsessed with them and cook Brussels on a weekly basis! We live Downtown and I want to say that within the last year or so there has been a Food Truck area established down the road.. we have never tried it and I'm dying to. This makes me wonder what kind of yummy goodness they are selling!
ReplyDeleteI wish we had food trucks! I'm always surprised they don't have them here, it seems like the perfect thing for hungry tourists coming off the beach at lunch time.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite parts of blogging is having all of these wonderful memories to hold on too. It sounds like you had a wonderful weekend. Those beef and mac and cheese eggrolls sound amazing. I have never had food from a food truck, I really want to try it.
ReplyDeleteThose Mac and Cheese egg rolls look so good. I am horrible to buy for because if I want something I just buy it, so it make it hard for people to buy it for me. I love a lot of DMB's older stuff for the 90's. I watched the Food Network channel so much on Sunday, it made me feel so inadequate as a foodie but it was mouth watering-ly good to watch.
ReplyDeleteBut yay! You get to go AND you have a super thoughtful guy! :)
ReplyDeleteI am so jealous of your DMB tickets :( I have been going every summer since high school, but this year, the days that he is playing around where I live are like 3 days before and 3 days after my due date. Something tells me it probably wouldn't be a good idea to buy tickets.
ReplyDeleteAnd I whine all the time and get my way. I did it this weekend to get my way on our car seat color and it totally worked!
hahaha i totally did the same thing to brad over a nike fuel band and ruined my birthday gift. we also both got each other amos lee tickets . i got them for his birthday which was jan 7th and he got them as my christmas present, so when i opened them up i just laughed and said he ruined my bday present for him! but yay for getting to go to DMB anyway!
ReplyDeleteWait that was your first time to Costco ever??? What did you think? Yours sells Toms?? I definitely need to keep my eye out the next time I go to mine :-)

Meet @ the Barre
I'm sorry you ruined your surprise but I laughed!! My husband is the surprise ruiner and then I pout. But how fun that you are going to the concert!! About the name of the food truck - desperate for people to try it? or maybe they really are idiots. The soup with egg looks yummy, I would want to try with egg, but I would need someone else to mix it up!! How's the crust on the pizza? My husband is a pizza fanatic and he will travel all over to get good pizza!
ReplyDeleteSince having my daughter- Costco is a must especially during the sample lunch time :)
ReplyDeleteI am so the kind of person who ruins my own surprises. I knew when my husband was going to propose. I also walked into the basement one time and found the bike he was hiding as a birthday present. But he doesn't know I knew about either of those. I'm also a relatively good actress. :P
ReplyDeleteI also would have whined and almost bought tickets just like you if I wanted to go badly enough! So awesome that it turns out you are going!
ReplyDeleteI was so close to buying brussel sprouts this weekend and then realized I don't know how to cook them. Yours sound delish!
I haven't been in a Costco in over 3 years!! I want to go now! I would want to buy all pizza things there. Oh, and no corking fee should be the norm at more places.
Lol it's a good thing he was around to stop you from buying the tickets! Those cookies are super cute.
ReplyDeleteDon't break up with me... but I hate DMB.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, that concert tickets story is SO cute! What a thoughtful gift from your husband! And I'm with you...I've ruined a few gifts by either buying them for myself, or talking about buying them for myself after the person's already bought them. Also, Costco is the best!
ReplyDeleteWe really love to get the tortilla-crusted tilapia (so fast and easy! DWSS ha) and the broccoli (it comes in 4 packages, so it's easy to use just one for dinner and you don't have to measure) at Costco.
ReplyDeleteAnd your post made me think of a story. I basically ruined my own gift that David never got me. Let me explain...
I really wanted to go to the Panic! at the Disco show when they were going to be here in KC. I dropped hint after hint and even made sure to do it in front of friends so they could keep him accountable. I wanted these tickets because I had never been to one of their shows and I've been a fan for years (judge away). One day, I have this epiphany. I am going to be out-of-town for a girls weekend on the night of the concert! I couldn't believe I hadn't checked the calendar. I frantically texted David to ask if he had gotten me the tickets. He said no. Whew. The one time I'm thankful he didn't listen to me!
So I'm sitting at the computer reading this and laughing and Tyrone is like "go ahead, tell me what your blogger friend did" and I do and he's like "oh that's like how you almost ruined your proposal" because I suggested a staycation the weekend he proposed when he had already booked a staycation room for the proposal. Whatev.
ReplyDeleteHa! So funny that you ruined your gift! But it makes for a funny story and you get to see Dave, so everybody wins!
ReplyDeleteAw sorry Valentine's Day didn't work out as planned.
ReplyDeleteI love food trucks! We have tons of them in NYC :)
Thanks for linking up with MMG!
